Carer Support Adviser for Young Carers £22,911 – £25,295 pro rata 37 or 30 hours per week

We are delighted that Carer Support Wiltshire has been selected to be the first Dorset Council’s Carers Lead Organisation. The new service for carers will be known as Carer Support Dorset.

Carer Support Dorset will, directly and indirectly through partnerships, develop the offer to carers in Dorset. As the first point of contact, information, support and advice will be offered to support all age carers to maintain maximum independence and wellbeing through enabling better understanding of the caring role. As well as the development of relevant skills and enabling access to support in their local community.

There will be a small team delivering the service from an office base near Blandford Forum, and hot desks with partners across the county. Using light touch assessment methods they will provide a response to help carers in their local community, including referrals and signposting where necessary.  This will include promotion and development of peer support including peer-facilitated carers groups, buddying, telephone/internet befriending and becoming familiar with the wide range of existing networks or groups and where gaps may exist.

Staff will meet and provide awareness sessions to organisations and universal services, to increase carer awareness and the number of carers registered on the Dorset Carer Register. The voice of carers will be central to the way the service is delivered, and increased participation and contribution of carers will be sought.

The service will include a telephone support line and a variety of materials in a wide range of formats, including on the website and printed. This will increase outreach to underrepresented carers such as working carers, rurally isolated carers and ‘hidden’ carers. A point of contact will be provided for young carers, particularly supporting them through transition to adulthood.

Carer Support Dorset will work closely with Carer Support Wiltshire, ensuring that carers in both counties are supported in the best way possible. To do this we are recruiting a Manager and Carer Advisers, one with a specialism for younger carers up to age 25.

The Manager will be full time, responsible for the day to day running and developing the service. This will involve managing a small team delivering a one stop shop for information, advice and guidance for carers in Dorset. They will work with other staff in the wider organisation to maintain high quality written materials and a website as well as being responsible for the Dorset Carers Register and other reporting as required. They will need to develop and maintain positive relationships with other agencies across Dorset, increasing awareness of carers and their needs, as well as identifying gaps in services and working with partners to fill them. There will be occasional evening or weekend work.

The Carer Advisers will be the first point of contact for carers, offering Information, Advice and Guidance through a telephone support line to individual carers as well as delivering awareness sessions to other agencies. They will have knowledge and understanding of support for carers available in Dorset and help to identify gaps, and develop services to fill them. The posts are for 30 or 37 hours, please specify which you would like. There will be occasional evening or weekend work.
