Aims of the competition

Judging sheet

Besides the main 'Best Village' competition, there are five other entry categories:

  • The People’s Project  - the village judged to have entered the best community project involving local people;
  • Environmental Champions - the village judged to be running the best ‘Green’ initiative.
  • Best Village Shop – sponsored by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), communities are asked to nominate the village shop which serves them best.
  • Young People’s Award - for projects led by people aged under 25 years of age who are helping their community or local environment.
  • Dorset Community Heritage Award, sponsored by Dorset Archaeological Committee to celebrate projects, including restoration of the appearance of a historic settlement, conservation of anything of historical interest, or interpretation of local heritage, to the benefit of the local community.

Magna Housing has been the main sponsor for the competition since 2010 and we are delighted to say have continued their generous support for another year.

Magna’s housing director, Tony Murray, said:

“We support the communities we are based in so it is very fitting that we are once again the main sponsor for the Dorset Best Village awards.  It is particularly significant this year as we will complete the first homes in our new programme of building in Dorset villages this summer.  The Best Village Awards is a great event which encourages people in villages to promote a strong community spirit and make Dorset villages great places to live.  We are proud to be associated with it.”
