A Shared Holiday Experience

“The holiday was the most wonderful experience and the carers were exceptional.” (Janet, Holidaymaker)

Every summer the Green Island Holiday Trust organises six one-week supported holidays for people with disabilities who live in Dorset and Hampshire. The holidays provide an opportunity to meet new friends, explore new places and have lots of fun whilst enjoying a varied programme of activities and outings. During each holiday, personalised care and support is provided by a friendly and dedicated team of volunteers who stay with the group 24 hours a day. So whilst guests have a great holiday experience, their carers’ are able to benefit from a week’s respite. The groups stay in two accessible cottages at Holton Lee, a well-being centre set in 350 acres of tranquil countryside on the edge of Poole Harbour. It provides the perfect base for on-site activities which include carriage riding, bird watching and wood craft whilst off site there are opportunities for trips out on St Elin, the Trust’s boat, and visits to local attractions and events. Appreciation of a memorable holiday experience is echoed time and again by holidaymakers who spend a week at Holton Lee. ‘When can I come again?’ is the most frequent question asked on the last day of the holiday! The volunteer teams know that they are making a big difference by sharing a holiday experience. Although helping the holidaymakers with their support needs can be hard work, a good time and lots of laughter is guaranteed.

“Where else could you get a free holiday with fantastic food, excellent company and lots of laughs? Time well spent, worthwhile and fun!” (Rose, Volunteer.)
