Transport
Transport is an integral part of modern living and is a critical issue when ensuring accessibility to jobs, learning, health care, shopping, leisure and other opportunities that can significantly impact our quality of life.
There are many accessibility schemes that operate successfully across the county, including dial-a-rides, befriending schemes, scooter schemes, volunteer car services and shop-mobility schemes. Examples of dial-a-rides are NORDCAT, the SCAT Bus in the Sherborne area, Home Hopper in Purbeck, Vision Wimborne Dial-a-Ride, Weymouth Dial-a-Bus, Axe Valley & West Dorset Ring & Ride and Christchurch Dial-a-Bus. These schemes operate services for people with disabilities, severe mobility problems and for older people who find it difficult to use existing transport.
Community transport is often perceived as only for older people, however, the Bopper Bus in West Dorset demonstrates how community transport initiatives can benefit younger people too.
