Social Enterprise Support

Jane Colvin, a qualified and experienced social enterprise and business adviser, is now employed by Dorset Community Action to offer support to existing and emerging social enterprises and community-led businesses across Dorset.

Social enterprises differ from traditional commercial businesses in both governance and profit-distribution.  They have a social objective and the distribution of profits benefits a community, not individual shareholders.  There are national examples of social enterprises both large (e.g. Cafedirect, Hackney Community Transport, The Eden Project) and small.  Examples of local social enterprises operating in Dorset include:

  • Community Village Shops
  • Community Centres
  • Pre-school groups and playgroups
  • Third Sector Support Infrastructure organisations
  • Community transport organisations

Advice and support is available now from Dorset Community Action on all aspects of social enterprise development including:

  • Business Planning
  • Governance
  • Legal Structures
  • Organisational Management
  • Financial Planning
  • Income generation
  • Marketing and publicity
  • Business-related matters
