Gypsy & Traveller Issues in Dorset - Training

BACKGROUND
DCA has secured a small grant from the Council for Racial Equality to carry out this piece of work. Which includes 2 training sessions and establishing a resource base about Gypsy & Traveller issues.

PURPOSE
To build people's capacity and effectiveness to promote a greater understanding & awareness of G & T's.
To give an opportunity to explore social and personal prejudices in a safe environment.
To equip participants in challenging stereotypes.

METHODS
Participative training.
Various exercises - ie, self reflection, case study, video and group discussions.
Sharing information on Culture, History Lifestyle with handouts.

OUTCOMES

Improved understanding of G & T's. Culture, History Lifestyle.
Improved understanding of the prejudices G& T's face.
Feeling more comfortable in challenging stereotypes and able to resolve conflict

FACILITATORS BACKGROUND (Pauline Trimming)
DCA's Community Development Worker, Pauline Trimming worked with the travelling community for about 10 years. She was the Gypsy & Traveller Liaison Officer (GLO) for Southampton City Council for 6 years, prior to that sheworked with the travelling community as a community worker, setting up Tenants Forums and play projects, working with other agencies to improve the life of the travelling community living on a site in Southampton. Pauline has a BTEC in Gypsy & Travellers Studies. During her time as the GLO, she facilitated a number of awareness raising courses about Gypsy & Traveller's to the Police Service, Health Workers, Playworkers, Teachers and Council Officers. She has also built up a wealth of resources.
