What's Bugging You?

'What's bugging you' is a collection of issues, concerns, suggestions, identified needs or 'bugs,' that voluntary and community groups across the county have identified during discussions with the Voice Projects Partnership Development Officers.

The voluntary and community sector in Dorset makes up a significant part of the economy delivering front line services to those often hardest to reach and in most need of help and support.  It is regularly best placed to identify need and develop creative, innovative solutions.

The Voice Projects 'What's Bugging You' pages aim to ensure those messages (or bugs,)  are heard within decision making partnerships in the county.

9 Is it possible for the names of successful tenderers to be relayed to other organisations that took part?

10 How do new and emerging groups get started in commissioning process, when we don't have a track record or references or funding or capacity!?!

11 There needs to be clearer transparency around any tenders / bids / contracts.

12 Details of SDS. Also how would they deal with residents of care work?

Information sought, and training identified which we hope to recruit a volunteer to attend and cascade back to the wider sector.              ( Dec 09)

13 Commissioners need to be realistic about the time and skills of trustees in medium sized organisations to engage in the commissioning process.

14 Like to know more about micro commissioning and any joint working across Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset within childrens services.

Bug, passed to 0-19 3rd Sector Forum.     (Nov 09)
15 Strictly commissioning event was very NHS focused, would like to see similar event with more childrens services involvement. Still need to know who to speak to about commissioning opportunities in childrens services.

16 Give more power to local communies through local community partnerships and parish/town councils, to make decisions about their localities. (less countywide decisions)

We have recorded this bug and will be looking after it until it is joined by enough, 'similar sounding' bugs to be delivered into the Dorset Strategic Partnership. (Dec 09)
17 Parking meters in Dorchester, need to be longer than 1hr.

18 Limit the number of houses of multiple occupancy (HMO) in one area. Transient people do not get involved in community, volunteering etc.

 19 Lack of volunteers

20 Lack of financing for CRB checks. Amount of paperwork imposed on small groups put them off organising activities

Difficulty recruiting new volunteers for committee, particularly officers positions

 22

Children and students can use public internet comuters in libraries free of charge for indefinate time, but as a volunteer working for the community I can only access the internet for half an hour free of charge. Is there any way that members of the VCS could use these facilities for longer periods of time free of charge?

 23

Most of our referrals come from social services, but we receive no statutory funding. Should services for the visually impaired be tendered out, because we'd be ready to bid.

 24

A big issue for our clients is affordable heating for older people on low incomes

25 A big issue for our clients is raising awareness of benefits they are entitled to, and encouraging / supporting them to apply.

26 As an organisation we find it difficult to recruit volunteers, especially volunteer drivers. My suggestion is that a general recruitment campaign amongst the unemployed is needed.

27 Lack of public transport on a Sunday makes it difficult for those who do not drive to attend meetings.

28 Better partnership working is needed between N. Dorset Social Services and voluntary sector groups who are providing a service that would be beneficial to their clients (eg, why can't they distribute talking Newspaper to those who don't already receive it, or promote / advertise for us?)

29 Why are local decisions in the county being made by people who are unaware of the local feelings?

30 Why are so many projects/ideas set up at county level and a large majority of the money is spent on staff and administration? When is the majority of the funds going to filter through to groups on the ground?

31 Why does it appear that whilst everything is being geared up for the Olympics, the thoughts and concerns of the residents are being ignored (eg. Weymouth Transport plan, we were not listened to at the consultation.)

32 Our project has benefitted from good partnership working with the PCT and Social Services. They have supported us with our work, promotion and awareness raising.

33 Our preschool is under threat of closure due to restructure of Purbeck schools. Our building is rented from one of the schools, meaning we could be 'homeless' in the next 2 years.

34 I would like to have a resource to distribute that is a short summary of how the strategic partnership works, issues that it covers and ways that individuals and groups can feed in. No more than 1 side of A4.

35 3S HWB forum to follow up some of the work falling out of the event & wants to be included in the action plan

36 Would like to find out how we can support the local youth club which has funding difficulties.

37 Need to raise our profile so that the community knows who we are, what we do and how to contact us.

 38 Recruiting volunteers

39 Raising the profile of our service - people need to know we exist, but advertising is too expensive.

40 Because we're an international organisation that does a lot of high profile stuff, that is the work people associate with us. They don't know about our local work.

Infrastructure support for older people's services discussed. Need to link to prevention & microcommissioning. Need for concrete outcomes!

42 I would like to know how to access more funding and support for our village hall.

43 How can we access grants to make our community building greener by improving our insulation.

44 Core funding is really hard to find - long term support is needed to develop the rest of our work.

45 Local decisions need to be made locally - less at county level more at district level.

46 Need to continue to raise the profile of what we can offer for local groups - publicity etc.

47 Would like to set up a mobility forum in Wareham - have written a short paper outlining main reasons.

48 Need to feel valued by the community we volunteer in and the council we provide services for

49 Funding and capacity

50 Lack of sexual health services for young people in Upton

51 More volunteers needed to match increased referrals (pan Dorset)

52 Want to start 'friends group' for local playground. Can planners involve local communities and children to decide how park is set up.

53 Hospital Transport often long and difficult to access. Taxi fares increasing dramatically - £80 from Swanage to Bournemouth hospital return.

54 There is a huge hole in support in the community for people with mental health issues. i.e. Preventative / self help information. - There is no help in my area for people who walk the fine line between coping with mental health problems, and health deteriorating, leading to need for hospital admissions. We need a mental health promotion drive - how to cope with anxiety / stress etc. so, to catch them before they crash!

55 Litter - how does one stop litter problems in the local nature reserve woodlands?

56 We need…. Trustees, volunteers and funding!

57 Our group has been serving the public for 28 years. We received a grant to do so until 4 years ago. We were interviewed by Bournemouth University 2 years ago, who were very impressed by our work, and advised us that we have saved DCC up to £45 million a year, according to their report. So why was our grant stopped? We are still very busy, 1300 jobs a year according to our records. We also still support social services and pick up on their cases.

58 Lack of support/ resources for working with SEN children. Lack of respect for our professional judgements about childrens health/wellbeing from local health workers (GPs health visitors etc.)
